Tokyo!

Tokyo! is a trilogy of short films that is intended to shed light on the largest city in Japan. The first segment, Interior Design (directed by Michel Gondry), shows the difficulty of moving to the city, finding a parking place, and landing a job. The third minifilm, Hikikomori (directed by Bong Joon-ho), focuses on someone with social anxiety. What is most politically interesting is Merde (directed by Leos Carax), in which a Caucasian suddenly emerges from the underground. Topless and barefoot in winter, the character (played by Denis Lavant) steals objects while walking down streets and then suddenly disappears down a manhole. News media then are parodied as they cover the incident, including a government announcement that immigration restrictions will be tightened, something almost impossible. The man emerges again, this time flinging hand grenades behind him while walking down streets. Captured, he is jailed, but he does not speak in a language that the authorities can understand. Evidently no Japanese can speak French, but a lookalike from France flies to Tokyo to assist in his trial. The Spartan condition of his cell is featured, demonstrating how Japanese jails fail to meet human rights standards. The trial itself shows how Japanese ethnocentrism eclipses any semblance of human decency. A surprise ending intimates that the person may have divine powers. MH
