CONFERENCE GROUP ON POLITICS & FILM
Affiliated with the American Political Science Association, the Conference Group on Politics and Film has organized several panels at the next annual convention of the association, to be held at Washington, D. C., on Labor Day weekend. A panel on August 28 will discuss the documentary Taking on the Kennedys, with its filmmaker, Joshua Seftel, at the podium, followed by a dutch-treat dinner. A panel on August 29 features papers on the theme “Washington on Film.” The third panel, scheduled for August 30, is entitled “Teaching the Discipline: Film as Methodology.” There will also be a business meeting at the convention on August 29.
PFS MEMBERS CAN NOMINATE BEST FILMS FOR 1997
Categories for awards are as follows:
o democracy
o exposé
o human rights
o peace
Send your nominations to the Political Film Society.
In addition, an award is given each year to the best political film in the Hawai`i International Film Festival, which is held in mid-November. The festival features films from Pacific Rim countries, including Russia and the United States but excluding Latin America.
ONE NOMINEE FOR 1997 PFS AWARD
Only one film has been nominated for an award for 1997. Rosewood is nominated for the category of Human Rights. As is customary, films with political themes tend to peak during election years and ebb during odd-numbered years.

POLITICAL FILM SOCIETY INVITES NEW MEMBERS
In its eleventh year of operation, the Political Film Society is the only organization that recognizes outstanding achievement in raising the political consciousness of the filmviewing public while working toward greater educational understanding of the role of film in politics. Initial membership is $5, payable to the “University of Hawai`i Foundation” and sent to the Political Film Society.
